Overcoming Workout Anxiety

Gyms can be intimidating.

Walking into a gym for the first time or returning after a long break can be an anxiety-inducing experience for many. The fear of judgment, uncertainty about movements, or comparison with others can make even the thought of working out overwhelming. At our gym, we understand these challenges and want to help you build confidence to thrive here at CFB. Here are practical tips to overcome workout anxiety and feel at home in the gym.

  • Start Small
We don’t expect you to do a super intense workout on your first day (even if you’ve been here before). Begin with manageable exercises that align with your current fitness level. Fitness is not one size fits all; many are in different parts of their journey. No one has any expectations for your abilities– we are just happy to have you there.
  • Plan Ahead
Knowing where to find the things you need and understanding how classes or sessions work can reduce uncertainty. That’s why our On-Boarding sessions ensure you are familiar with our classes’ movements, layout, and structure. You can always ask for a little refresher if you’ve been away from the gym for a while!
  • Focus on Your Progress, Not Others
It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others in the gym. Remember, we are all the stars in our own show… most people truly aren’t paying attention to you the way you think they are. Whatever feelings you have are likely being felt or have been felt by those around you. Once again, we are all just happy to have you here!
  • Practice Positive Self-Talk
Your mindset plays a significant role in how you feel about working out. Replace negative thoughts with affirmations, such as ‘I am strong’ or ‘I’m here to improve myself.’ We also believe in the power of ‘yet’. Replacing your ‘I can’t do x’ with an ‘I can’t do x yet’ is a great way to empower and remind yourself that just because you don’t have something now doesn’t mean you never will.
  • Give Yourself Time
Confidence doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a skill that develops over time with consistent effort. Be patient with yourself, and remember that showing up is already a win.

By taking small steps, seeking support, and focusing on your own growth, you can build confidence and transform your gym experience. At our gym, we’re here to help every step of the way. Whether through personal coaching, group classes, or a supportive community, we’re committed to making your fitness journey a positive and empowering one.
