Creating an Inclusive Environment Together

CrossFit gyms are known for their strong sense of community, where friendships form, and people support each other in their fitness journeys. However, it’s important to ensure that this camaraderie doesn’t become exclusive or “clicky.” A gym environment should be inclusive, where everyone—regardless of fitness level, experience, or background—feels welcome, supported, and a part of the group.

This is something we all must strive for together since it can become so easy to be comfortable with a few select people. The problem is that newer members, those who are quieter, or those who come in less frequently might feel hesitant to join in conversations or partner workouts if they feel like they’re on the outside looking in. This can undermine the supportive environment we all love, especially as our gym continues to grow.

How can we all work together to make CFB a place where all feel included and welcome?

Acknowledge New Members and Make Introductions
For someone walking into a CrossFit gym for the first time, it can be intimidating—especially when they see familiar groups of people chatting and laughing together. For many, they assume that everyone that is in class is lightyears ahead of them.  Both coaches and long-time members can make an effort to introduce new faces to the group. A simple introduction goes a long way in making someone feel included. A good rule of thumb: introduce yourself if you see someone you don’t recognize!

Be Mindful of How You Interact
It’s natural to form friendships with certain people, especially when you see them often. But try to be mindful of whether your actions might unintentionally make others feel excluded. Remember the thought of being the last person picked in gym class? The feeling can be similar when you’re new in class, and there’s a partner workout, or they’re asked to pair up on a lift. Are you always pairing up with the same person for workouts? Do you stick to the same group of people after class? If so, make an effort to include others.

Encourage Everyone
Don’t forget to spread the encouragement around! Cheer on the people you aren’t as close to as well, especially if you see someone struggling. Make a point to acknowledge people you don’t usually work out with. A simple fist bump, “Great job today!” or “You crushed that!” can make someone’s day and help them feel more connected.

Engage in Community Events
Our gym hosts community events and socials for a reason—they’re great opportunities to connect with everyone, not just the people you see during your regular class times. Attend these events with an open mind, ready to get to know new faces and strengthen the broader community.

The community at CFB is one of the main reasons our gym is so special. Let’s continue working together to ensure it’s something that all can experience!
